Champions League – Round 5 – Wednesday 27/11

Here we have Wednesday’s fixtures from the 5th Champions League group stage round. Just like on Tuesday, there will be several derby matches that could end up deciding who goes to the last 16 phase. Wednesday will bring us 3 outstanding matches; Barcelona vs Borussia Dortmund, Valencia vs Chelsea, and Liverpool vs Napoli. These fixtures could make or break the season for each of the 4 clubs who are featured in them. Below you will find previews for Wednesday’s Champions League matches.

Valencia vs Chelsea >> click here for live odds

Last round’s victory against Lille has put Valencia back in the running for one of the top positions in their group. At the moment, they have the same amount of points as Chelsea and they defeated them in London 0:1 in the reverse fixture. However, Chelsea is a different team to what they were at the start of the season. Lampard has improved their performance in every aspect. Even without new signings, the London Blues are looking very strong. In the last round, they went down 4:1 against Ajax. However, in the last 30 minutes of the match they came back and secured a 4:4 draw in one of the most amazing matches that anyone has ever witnessed. They will want payback against Valencia as Lampard’s side will travel to Spain to get all 3 points.

Chelsea are in a better position at the moment as Valencia have some internal issues. Nevertheless, their defense has been good so maybe they can hold on to a draw against Chelsea. Since we can’t pick a winner, we decided to go with a Both Teams to Score outcome.

Zenit vs Lyon >> click here for live odds

Group G is one of the most exciting groups because there are no clear favorites to go through. All 4 teams are pretty much equal when it comes to quality. Zenit are on a bad run of two losses and they hope to get all 3 points when they host Lyon on Wednesday. The reverse fixture, finished with a 1:1 draw; however, Zenit will have their fans on their side this time around. Lyon won their last group match 3:1 and they will hope for something similar on Wednesday. Additionally, Lyon could get a nice advantage even with just a draw against Zenit.

Zenit have home turf advantage but Lyon are in a better position on the table. They will travel to Russia and will be very happy if they get any result except a loss. We are backing a X2 Double Chance outcome.

Barcelona vs Borussia Dortmund >> click here for live odds

The Catalans complicated their Champions League future with the draw they played against Slavia Prague in the last round. A victory would have seen them through to the last 16 phase but now they have to do it the hard way. Dortmund looked like they were going out of the tournament when they fell 2 goals behind in the first half against Inter. However, they scored 3 goals in the 2nd half and are now right behind Barcelona on the table. The reverse fixture finished 0:0 but they have to travel to Camp Nou in the 5th round. It’s a place where no one has defeated the Catalans in the Champions League since 2013. Dortmund need to get at least a draw if they want to increase their chances of going to the last 16 phase.

This will be one of the most exciting fixtures in the 5th Round of the CL group stage. Barcelona haven’t been dominant even though they have a packed squad and are sitting on the top of both their league table and the CL group table. Dortmund can create trouble for them but the Catalans seem impossible to beat when they play at Camp Nou. For that reason, we are backing a Home Side Victory outcome.

Genk vs Red Bull Salzburg >> click here for live odds

Genk knew they were the outsiders when they got drawn in this group; however, they had no idea how strong Salzburg is. That’s why they have just 1 point on the table and are basically out of any competition. To avoid that, they need to defeat Salzburg on Wednesday which at the moment seems like a very hard task. The Red Bull side have been the surprise of the tournament so far. They had both Napoli and Liverpool on the ropes even though they managed just 1 point from those matches. In the reverse fixture, Salzburg scored 6 goals against Genk and their fans will hope for something similar on Wednesday.

Performance and quality wise, Salzburg are clear favorites for this fixture. So far, they have scored more goals than most of the best teams in this tournament. It’s interesting to see Salzburg being the top scorers in a group that features both Napoli and Liverpool. With that being said, we are backing an Away Side Victory outcome.

Lille vs Ajax >> click here for live odds

Lille lost their chances of finishing in one of the 3 positions that can continue their European football dream. They have just 1 point on the table and have to host the table leaders Ajax. They have home turf advantage; however, the Amsterdam side is playing some of the best football in the world at the moment. They had qualification in sight in the previous round against Chelsea. They were 3 goals up but then the unthinkable happened. Ajax got 2 red cards in one minute which changed the whole game. Chelsea then crawled back to a draw which means Ajax need at least 1 more victory to guarantee themselves a spot in the last 16 phase.

It’s hard to look past Ajax for this one even though they will be missing two very important players due to the red cards they got in the previous round. Ajax should have enough quality to win against Lille even with a rotated squad. That’s why we are backing an Away Side Victory outcome.

Liverpool vs Napoli >> click here for live odds

Last year, this same fixture was won by Liverpool with a 1:0 score. They had to win in order to proceed from the group stage and at the end they became the Champions of Europe. This season started in the same manner, with Liverpool losing to Napoli in the reverse fixture. However, things turned much better for Liverpool after that match and they are now on top of the group table. With a win, Liverpool will go through to the last 16 phase regardless of what happens in the last round. Napoli on the other hand can put themselves in a bad position if they lose on Wednesday. On the other hand, a draw could be beneficial to both sides but that will give Salzburg an opportunity to create a major upset in the last round.

Liverpool have home turf advantage and they are also in a much better position than Napoli. The Italian side is having major internal problems as a large feud is going on between the owner and the squad. However, Napoli’s players might want to prove something on the field and facing a strong side like Liverpool will be the perfect chance for them. Because of that, we are backing an Over 2.5 Goals outcome.

RB Leipzig vs Benfica >> click here for live odds

The Red Bull side need a win against Benfica to ensure their participation in the last 16 phase. They defeated them once in the reverse fixture and Leipzig fans will be confident that their team can do something similar on Wednesday as well. Benfica, who were supposed to be one of the strongest teams in this group are not performing on the level that’s expected from them. They have just 3 points and another loss could see them lose any hope of going further than the group stage. As a matter of fact, they could lose their chances of finishing 3rd and going to the Europa League as well. Benfica did manage to score the last time they played each other but that wasn’t enough to get a positive result. This time they are playing away from home which will complicate things even further.

Leipzig have the momentum at the moment as they are sitting on top of the group table and are also doing very well in the Bundesliga. Benfica, on the other hand, are doing good in their domestic league but their performances in the Champions league have been awful. For that reason, we are backing a Home Side Victory outcome.

Slavia Prague vs Inter Milan >> click here for live odds

Even though Slavia is not a top rated team, this fixture is very important for the final outcome of Group F. The team from Prague has played fantastic in all the matches in the group so far. Even in the ones they lost, that outcome happened because of the individual quality of the other team. They even managed to hold Barcelona to a draw at the Camp Nou. On the other hand, the Italian side is in a very tough position at the moment. The defeat to Dortmund in the previous round means that they now have to defeat Slavia and then get a positive result against Barcelona in the last round. In the reverse fixture, Slavia led for most of the match and Inter barely managed a draw. Now they will play at home which is an even bigger advantage for Slavia and it won’t be a huge surprise if they get a positive outcome against Inter.

Quality wise, Inter should have this one in the bag. However, performance wise, Slavia looks much better and it could happen that they defeat Inter on Wednesday. Picking the Italian side as winners is not a good idea and the odds reflect that. That’s why, we are backing a Both Teams to Score outcome.
